With Zuckerberg Gone Android, Will Facebook Get Better Mobile Apps?

Android users, rejoice! Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg will now be forced to feel your pain. The Android app for Facebook could be charitably described as less functional than the iPhone app. We’re sure there are good reasons for this, the greatest of which is likely market share. With iOS-running phones composing more than half of all smartphones, according to recent research, it’s in Facebook’s best interest to focus on this segment first. Still, for the ever-growing number of Android device users who also would like a little Facebook mobile action, the pared-down feature set of Facebook for Android makes us feel neglected — the redheaded stepchildren of Facebook mobile users. But now that “Zuck” is one of us, all that’s about to change… right? Historically, Facebook has made fairly few gestures toward the Android platform. It launched its official Android app last fall and rolled out an SDK for Android devs just a couple months ago. But Facebook’s iPhone work, which began with an official app launch in the summer of 2008, has been nothing short of fantastic. iPhone users can chat, watch videos and more all from within the app. Recent patents suggest even deeper app/hardware integration . And the app keeps up with Apple’s iOS updates, too . For reference, we polled Twitter users on what they specifically would change or what they currently dislike about Facebook’s Android app. The app’s notification system was by far the most-cited annoyance. Another common complaint was the app’s redirects to Facebook’s mobile touch site rather than having more in-app functionality. Users are having a hard time clicking and launching the links posted by their friends, let alone sharing links and items. One user said he’d like to have an easier way to view Pages, and several noted the lack of Facebook Chat features, which the iPhone app does have. Also, a few folks complained that the app is slow and prone to frequent crashes. As a personal aside, and with my heartfelt apologies to the developer team working on Facebook’s mobile offerings, I have never found that the usefulness of the Facebook for Android app outweighed the frustration of trying to use it, and I’ve lately avoided using the app altogether. So, returning to our original question: Will Mark Zuckerberg like the taste of his own dogfood? And if he doesn’t, will Android app users see fast-tracked changes and upgrades to …

Dell Streak to get Froyo later this year, T-Mobile wants none of it

Two pieces of news for all you Streak Freaks out there: First up, you can breathe a sigh of relief as, according to Android Central , Dell have now confirmed that the 5 inches of hotness will, indeed, get an over-the-aether upgrade to Android 2.2 later this year. It’ll still launch with Android 1.6, but you can feel safe in the knowledge that your device won’t be abandoned in the ancient halls of obscurity. But what’s this? Dell have now also confirmed that the Streak won’t run on T-mobile’s 3G network. Uh-oh. This is clearly bad news for the T-Streak Freaks in the audience. So, unless you’re of the patient type that doesn’t mind staring outside of the train/bus/ferry/helicopter window for most of your morning commute as your page loads and loads and loads and loads over an EDGE connection, I’d consider moving to a different device/network. If you’re still keen (and you probably should be), you can hit up the pre-sale page here , and leave your contact details to be eligible for a shipping upgrade to 2nd Business Day, as well as the opportunity to buy a Plantronics Bluetooth headset for only $0.99 when purchased with the Streak.

Google Pushes Further into Yelp’s Territory with Maps for Android Update

In an update coupled with Google Maps 4.4 for Android 1.6 and above, Google has improved the mobile offering of Places . Android owners can now add the Places icon to their home screens and use it to quickly locate nearby venues and their accompanying information-rich business listings. The mobile Places experience now lets users query nearby places by voice or text, or dive into default categories — think restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels and gas stations — or custom-saved categories to search for places. Returned results are based on its expanding database of Place Pages . When pulling up a Place Page for a venue, users can glimpse the open hours for the business, easily see the distance and compass direction, and check out prices, parking and restaurant menu links. The enhanced mobile Places offering will also be rolled out to BlackBerry users when Google updates m.google.com/maps . The Google Places product as a whole continues to evolve as the company makes an aggressive attempt to usurp Yelp, and all other other competitors, in the minds of web and mobile users who are searching for local business information. Groupon application hits Android, bringing daily deals of up to 90% off

Groupon is one of many services that are popping up lately that offer big daily discounts on goods and services from local businesses. As an example of what these deals contain, my wife and I have about 3 coupons sitting on our table for $40 worth of food and drink at local Minneapolis restaurants that were purchased for $20 each. It’s a good way for local businesses to generate new customers (and potentially repeat business), and a good way for consumers to discover new places they might enjoy on the cheap. Now, by and large these coupon applications have stayed away from standalone apps for Android (there are a few out there, of course). Groupon is hoping to buck this trend, however, as they announced yesterday the launch of their Android application, which will bring these deals right to your Android device. Groupon for Android allows Android users to purchase the deal of the day, access your purchased Groupon so you can easily redeem it by showing your phone at the local business, and find all nearby businesses. This is a 1.0 release that Groupon built for Android as a result of overwhelming requests from Android users. Because of the heavy demand, Groupon wanted to get out an application that worked well but didn’t have all of the features it wanted to include. But fear not, Groupon is already hard at work on the next version which will include forum access and a Groupon widget. Better yet, they want to hear your ideas to incorporate into future releases. Have an awesome idea? Head over to the Groublogpon blog and let them know about it. Don’t have any good ideas? Groupon is now available for free on the Android market for all Android 1.6+ devices, so head over to the market and download it to start saving today. Groupon Brings Daily Deals to Android Devices

Deal-a-day startup Groupon has just released its Android app. The application is a brand new offering that complements the website and allows users to score deals and view their purchased Groupons from their Andriod mobile phones. The Groupon Android app is now available in the Android Market. The app introduces the Groupon experience to an ever-expanding user base who, according to the company, have been anxious to get their hands on it. The application is fairly straightforward and mimics the experience on the iPhone [iTunes link]. Upon launch, users will immediately see the current deal of the day with a timer that counts down the time left to buy. Users can also navigate to the My Groupons…

Droid X users gobbling up 5x the data of other Verizon smartphones

Been wondering why Verizon would seek to curb its unlimited data plans with bogus restrictions ? Wonder no more. Jennifer Byrne, a business development executive director at Big Red, has shared with us the shocking stat that early data usage from Droid X owners is five times what other smartphones are suckling down. Clearly, the jumbo screen is being used to the fullest by those lucky enough to get an X when they wanted one, and Verizon is (outwardly, at least) really, really excited to see such keen use of its network. Enjoy it while it lasts , Droidsters! Droid X users gobbling up 5x the …

Sprint announced today that they will be bringing the push-to-talk Motorola i1 to their customers later this month for $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate.  Available next Sunday, July 25th, the ruggedized i1 features a 5 megapixel camera, a 3.1-inch HVGA screen, and a strong lineup of preloaded applications.  Unfortunately, the phone is hampered by the fact that it runs Android 1.5 and there’s no telling when an update will arrive.  On the other hand, this is the most advanced smart phone that Nextel customers have had to choose from. It’s also worth pointing out that the target demographics is highly unlikely to care about…
