The Droid X got rooted just about a month ago , but still users are unable to run their own custom ROMs — something seen as a basic right amongst the Android community. Now those chaps are a good bit closer to getting there thanks to a new recovery mechanism posted by Koush. What’s taking so long? The security mechanisms on the Droid X are said to be “a real bitch” and, to circumvent them, Koush had to hijack a logging process that runs at boot-up. This process runs in place of that, allowing a user to restore their phone to a previous backup generated before trying to do something wild and crazy. What does this mean? ROM runners now have a means of safely retreating if they find themselves cornered (or bricked), allowing them to try more daring assaults more often, and meaning we could be only days away from Droid X users being allowed to fully express themselves. Verizon’s remaining 2010 roadmap to be an Android-fest of phones and tablets?
Practically everything we’ve heard — both officially and through tipsters — lines up with information coming out of Phone Arena this week detailing a truly Google-heavy upcoming Fall and Winter release schedule for our friends at Big Red. Starting next month, it seems that we’ll see a global version of the just-launched Droid 2 , possibly with a white option (though it seems this could also be the R2-D2 model), and the Motorola WX455 we’d leaked has been named “Citrus” and will (as you probably could’ve guessed) target the low end of the market and the young’uns who are looking for an affordable way to get into Android; as WWAN-enabled laptops go, they’ll be picking up the Dell Vostro V13 and the HP Pavilion DM1 . Follow the break for the rest of the action! [Thanks, Steven C. ] Continue reading Verizon’s remaining 2010 roadmap to be an Android-fest of phones and tablets? Chrome OS tablet coming from Google and Verizon on Black Friday?
We’ve been waiting on pins and needles for Google to announce some official Android tablet plans for so long we’d almost forgotten about Mountain View’s other operating system — but from what we’re hearing, Chrome OS is about to jump to center stage with a tablet debut on Verizon just before the holidays. Our friends at Download Squad are told by a reliable tipster that HTC is building a Tegra 2-based Chrome OS tablet for Google with a 1280 x 720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, at least 32GB of storage with the possibility of expansion, GPS, a webcam, and the usual wireless connectivity, including a 3G radio. Launch is pegged for Black Friday on November 26, and apparently the plan is to offer the device for extremely cheap or free on subsidy, which makes sense — it is just a browser, after all, and “free” sounds mighty nice compared to the iPad’s $499 entry point. (Of course, you’ll undoubtedly be tied to a Verizon contract, but we’ll just let that slide for now.) We’ll see how much of this comes true in the next few months — we’re certainly intrigued. Update: DLS says that the specs here are “pure speculation,” but that the source was solid on the launch date and Verizon partnership. Looks like we’re still hanging on, we suppose. T-Mobile G2 with Google confirmed as first HSPA+ handset
T-Mobile has finally confirmed the G2 rumors by sending our a short press release to the media and updating their HSPA+ handset teaser site . Official details are still scarce at this point, but I believe most of the information from our inside source is still spot on. For starters, the full name of the product is the T-Mobile G2 with Google, which leads us to believe the G2 really is a Google-experience device that will feature the stock version of Android 2.2. T-Mobile had been using the Espresso Sense UI on their HTC handsets, but the G2 will maintain the tradition of regular vanilla FroYo Android. We also still believe that inside the G2 you will find a Qualcomm MSM7230 , which is sort of like a budget Snapdragon targeted at the mainstream audience. The MSM7230 has the same Scorpion CPU as previously commercialized in the Snapdragon QSD8x50 chipset found in other HTC phones and it has a clock speed of 800 MHz to 1 GHz. The G2 prototype was said to currently be running at 800 MHz, but I suspect it will be bumped to 1 GHz by launch. Even though T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network supports speeds up to 21 Mbps, this device has a theoretical peak capability of 14.4 Mbps. Future handsets should eventually support 21 Mbps, but we believe the first couple of launches will be set at 14.4 Mbps (which is still faster than any competing Android phone). T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network will deliver 4G-like speeds to 185 million people this year and you can check coverage in your local area by visiting T-Mobile’s site. I’ve already seen some sites speculate the G2 could look like the leaked images of the myTouch HD , but our sources tell us this is the QWERTY keyboard device we had been calling the G1 Blaze (pictured below). T-Mobile will announce more details in the coming weeks, but their leaked roadmap indicated a device called the “HTC Vanguard” was slated for September 9th. We expect the G2 was codenamed Vanguard and will still launch in September, but the actual date might have been adjusted by now. If you want to stay in the loop, make sure to visit the teaser site and sign up for future e-mail alerts. Current T-Mobile customers can get exclusive first access, so go register now if you…

HTC Widlfire “soft” rooted
So, it’s not the big, badass hard root that enables custom ROMs and NAND unlocks, but the HTC Wildfire now has a method of rooting that allows the installation (and more importantly, the execution) of all those wonderful “root only” apps on the Android Market. Despite this limitation, you Wildfire owners can’t really grumble, as now you can wirelessly tether your internet connection, backup your apps n settings, or take screenshots, among other tasks. Full details on how to get it on your phone are over at XDA , but note that you will have to re-enable root every time you reboot your phone. Don’t forget: Austin Android meetup tonite!
Tonite (Tuesday, 8/17) we’ll be meeting downtown at Opal Divine’s on 6th St at 7pm for a good dose of Android nerdery, drinks, and food. For those not in the know, the Austin Android Users Group meets about once a month, usually near downtown Austin, for a couple hours of socializing and light Android talk. Sometimes we have a specific agenda or guest speaker, sometimes we just hang out. And while tonite is one of those nights with no real course of action, we still plan on having a great time with our ever-growing group of local Android users. In the past few months we’ve grown from a handful of users (seriously, one meeting was 3 people) to filling an entire room at Opal Divine’s (who have been generous enough to host our rowdy bunch multiple times). Since the meetup starts in just a couple hours, I should probably apologize for how insanely late this post is. Instead, I’ll use it as an opportunity to scold you for not already following the AAUG on Twitter or being active on the mailing list . Because if you did (or were) you’d already be aware of the impending meetup and life would be easier on all of us. So, if you find this post useful, consider yourself scolded. Note: Also tonite, a couple minutes after the meetup, I’ll be taking a few minutes to discuss a new project with interested developers. Austin Builds Apps is a weekly meetup group looking for a couple of skilled developers with some free time. Second Note: If you’ve got an Android group building or a meetup coming soon in your area, let us know. We love keeping the community informed about local events!
