Remove Bloatware from your Samsung Captivate

So you just bought yourself a brand new Samsung Captivate.  You are finding that you love just about everything except for say, fifteen preloaded AT&T titles.  Yeah.  There are a slew of apps that come installed on your phone, including AT&T Navigator, AT&T Radio, AT&T Maps, AT&T Music,  and AT&T Mobile Hotspots.  The first thing many of us want to do is remove the stuff we don’t want or expect to use.  Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as uninstalling an application. Thankfully, the XDA-developers have found a workaround that helps to remove all the junk you don’t want. Before running off to do this, I should warn you.  The process involves rooting your Captivate as well as some sideloading of apps.  If you don’t feel entirely comfortable with the process, you may want to hold off.  Bricking a brand new phone always sucks and I’d hate to see you sitting with a Super AMOLED paperweight.  However, if you are brave enough, here’s what you do.  Head to this post at BriefMobile and follow the steps.  They are plenty detailed and should make sense if you follow them properly. To be completely fair, AT&T is not the only carrier doing this.  Pretty much everyone across the board is loading something on the phone that was selected by the carrier.  Be it a game or branded utility app, Android phones are showing up with bloatware.  The Captivate from Samsung and AT&T just happened to be a recent example of a carrier stepping over the line.  As time goes, I fully expect to see more tutorials on removing other preloaded apps and utilities for phones. How to save movies to a micro SD memory card

How to save movies to a micro SD memory card

Most Android phones come with mini SD card or memory card that you can use to save tons of data. The Motorola Droid comes with a 16gb, HTC Desire comes with 8gb; both support up to 32gb microSD card storage. If you upgrade your phone to a 32gb microSD, that means you can carry lots of data and media files including photo, music, movie, and documents with you on the go. Your phone should sync with your PC for data transfer but the easiest way to transfer  data to and from PC is the USB port. It is as simple as plug and play. I recently bought a Cellet USB microSD/microSDHC Reader for a test run. It worked great. I was able to transfer my musics and movies to the memory card. I also created folders and transferred many word documents and PDF files to my memory card. In main features of ellet USB microSD/microSDHC Reader include:

    Cellet USB microSD/microSDHC Reader
    Cellet USB microSD/microSDHC Reader

Write up to 8MB/sec. – Plug and play hot swapping – Easy to install, use, and carry It is very easy to install and use. Installations: Insert the memory card to the micro USB card reader. Connect the micro USB card reader to your PC/Laptop via the USBport. Green light will appear while it is working.

The information below will provide you with all the information you should need to transfer and play music on your phone

1.What music transfer tools do I need?

To put music on your computer and then load it on your phone, you need:
A Microsoft Windows PC or Apple Macintosh
    A USB data cable.

    2.You need a memory card

Your music is stored on your memory card. Your phone supports removable microSD memory cards up to 32 GB capacity.

    3. What music file formats can I play?

Your phone can play many types of files: MP3, AMR-NB/WB, PCM/WAV, AAC, ACC+, eAAC+, MIDI, WMA, and OGG Vorbis. For more details on music formats, you can visit the Android developer site HERE.

Your phone will not play DRM protected music. This includes any DRM protected content previously purchased through VCAST. Most retailers will have an unlocked version or the ability to unlock DRM music for an additonal fee (iTunes $.025)

    4. What headphones can I use?

Your phone has a 3.5mm headset jack for wired stereo listening. You can go wireless with Bluetooth® stereo headphones or speakers.

    5. Sync music files using Windows Media Player.

With a memory card inserted, and your phone showing the home screen, connect a Motorola micro USB data cable to your phone and your computer. Your phone should show in the status bar.

Note: Your phone supports Microsoft® Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Apple® Macintosh®. Other operating systems may not be compatible.
    Drag down the notification bar.
Tap USB connected to select the connection.
Tap Mount to connect your memory card to your computer. You can’t use the files on your memory card while it is connected.
On your computer, open Windows Media Player.
On the “Sync” tab, select “More Options”. Under “Device”, select your phone
Select “Properties”, check the “Create folder hierarchy on device” box, and click “OK”.
Drag your music files over to the “Sync List” and press “Start Sync”.

    6. Transfer using USB

Transfer music files from a computer to your memory card.
With a memory card inserted, and your phone showing the home screen, connect a Motorola micro USB data cable from your phone’s micro USB port to a USB port on your computer. Your phone should show in the status bar.

Note: Your phone supports Microsoft® Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Apple® Macintosh®. Other operating systems may not be compatible.
    Drag down the status bar.
Tap USB connected to select the connection.
Tap Mount to connect your memory card to your computer. You can’t use the files on your memory card while it is connected.
On your Windows PC, find “Removable Device” (your memory card) in the “My Computer” window.

On your Apple Mac, your phone should appear as a new drive on the desktop.
Drag and drop your music to a folder on your memory card.

Tip: To help manage your music, create a “Music” folder on your memory card.
When you’re done, use the “Safely Remove Hardware” feature to finish.

    7. Use Motorola Media Link

Motorola Media Link (MML) is a free PC software download that connects your Motorola Android phone to your PC. It allows you to easily transfer, sync, manage, back up and share your phone’s content.

Motorola Media Link is available at www.motorola.com/medialink

The G1 is Relevant Again… No Thanks to Google

Lately I have been looking with envy on my Android Guy brethren who have some of the cooler Android based handsets out there. I almost jacked my friend’s Nexus One after letting me play with.  I thought about hitting him over the head with it and running. The cause for my madness was the recent realization that my G1 is officially obsolete.  It started when the new Twitter App was released and I found that I could not download. For various reasons, Google gives no more love to the G1.  I was almost ready to admit defeat. My arms have been twitching, waiting for November when my two year plan rolls over …
